You will need:

  • 2 sheets red paper, 30cm x 30cm each
  • 2 strips black paper, 30cm x 4cm each
  • Small piece cream, white, silver or gold paper (to represent belt buckle)
  • 3 large white buttons
  • Paper bag with handles (ours measures 20cm wide x 24cm high)
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Craft glue

To make:

1. Start by lightly marking the bottom edge of your paper bag onto the straight edge of one piece of red paper. This will determine where you start rounding the shape to make Santa’s belly.

2. Use a circular object that sits within the marked edge, such as a plate or the lid of a pot. Trace around the shape then cut both red sheets of paper so they are exactly the same shape. The bottom of the lid’s shape should match up with the width of the paper bag as marked earlier in step 1.

3. Cut 2 strips of black paper, 30cm x 4cm, to represent the belt, one for either side of the bag.

4. Cut a rectangular piece of paper slightly thicker than the black paper, 8cm x 6cm. This will be the buckle. Place the black strip of paper, buttons and ‘buckle’ on to one of the pieces of red paper to get the right look. When you are happy with the arrangement glue the black strip and buttons in place using craft glue. Following the curve of the red paper cut the ends of the black strip. Glue the other black strip to the other piece of red paper at the same height/level. Cut out the middle of the rectangle at the same thickness as the belt and glue this in place.

5. Glue the paper bag to one side of the red paper and press down firmly. Make sure that the sides and bottom of the white paper bag fold inwards in a ‘V’ shape, as shown in the photo, so that the bag can be folded flat. Glue the second piece of red paper to the other side of the white paper bag. You are nearly finished!

6. Trim the top of the paper bag to follow the curve of Santa’s belly. Stand the bag up and admire your work!

DIY Elf Gift Bag

We used a wine bag on this occasion for the elf bag, though a smaller bag would look cute too. Simply adjust the size of the buttons and black strip of paper accordingly. A great way to package homemade chocolates or slices to give as gifts for Christmas.

You will need:
Green wine bag
4 small black buttons
1 strip black paper
Small piece of cream, white, silver or gold paper (to represent belt buckle)
Scissors
Craft glue

To make:

1. Cut 2 strips of black paper to match the width of your bag.

2. Cut middle of small rectangular piece of cream paper to represent the buckle.

3. Place items on bag before glueing to check the arrangement.

4. Glue the 2 strips of black paper to the front and back of the bag, at the same level.

5. Add the buttons and small rectangular paper. Finished!
